July 1991

The following video features the arrival of the EC57 volunteers to St. Lucia. The first segment might have been recorded on or just before July 26, 1991. Welcoming the St. Lucia volunteers at Hugh & Bertha’s starting with Marge and Jack. Then fellow trainer Carole is sick of me recording her. The next day, Ingrid and her fellow Dominica volunteers arrived on St. Lucia. The rest of the video shows food for sale at Castries Market and a bus ride out of Castries. Where was I going? I do not remember.

I finally added narration to a video. This one includes Castries, viewed from the top of Gros Piton with Denise, Jim, Christophe, and Mariness. A mill at the bottom of Gros Piton. Riding back from the hike on Gros Piton and the Pitons at Sunset.

I assume that this video was also recorded on July 13, 1991. Jim Carlson seems to be driving us around his home base. In this edited video, you will see Jim Carlson’s house with cameos from Leigh, Cristophe and Denise. We then get close to the Pitons of St. Lucia and take a look at the Dasheene Hotel, which looks different now. Rob climbs a tree to get us some food and then we go to Marigot Bay, where Dr. Doolittle was filmed. Now that I’ve finally started editing the raw footage, the next step might be to narrate the video.

8 September

During the second week of training model school began (6 August). I also left the hotel. I stayed with ANDY and JENNY MONTGOMERY. Staying with them had its benefits. On Thursday (8 Aug) Jim, ANDY, JENNY, Christophe, and I went to Philipe’s house for dinner. We had a quiche-like omelet pie. We also had banana desserts due to the abundance of bananas that could not be put on the recently on-fire Geest boat.

On Friday I helped make salad and dessert for the upcoming parties. Shortly after Christophe left Andy’s and Jenny’s I left to meet Diane at Gros Islet. I enjoyed dancing with her. We took a taxi back to Vigie and Castries.

Saturday (10) was the Big Beach Party. I planned to start staying at Jack’s that night. That was impossible because Jack was staying at Andy’s and Jenny’s after the EC 56 party. This was the one-year anniversary of the swearing in of EC 56 volunteers. Some EC 55 people & one EC 57 PCV attended.

Even though I numbered my videotapes, tape three had earlier footage than tapes one and two. After posting almost all of tape one, I realized that I needed to edit the footage down to something worth watching. I was not really good at filming in 1991. Maybe it will get better. I will eventually post all of the raw footage on my YouTube channel. This video shows our visit to the Choiseul Arts Center where Peace Corps Volunteer Jim Carlson worked.

The ambassador for the East Caribbean Phillip Hughes speaks to the EC57 trainees. More info on the ambassador is at this site: www.presidency.ucsb.edu My notebook indicates that there was also a Q&A session with the trainees but maybe I deleted it. I doubt many people can get through this video, but it does show how people talked about developing countries and what US foreign policy was like in the early 90s. In less than a day google put this you tube video pretty high in the searches for Phillip Hughes.

Video from August 11, 1991. Nothing too exciting; just hanging with Andy as he paints his helmet, the view from the back of Jack’s house, Michael’s kay, Jenny, Jack, Jim, and Jack’s street
