4 August

Sunday some volunteers and trainees traveled by boat to Soufriere. We saw the volcano, Diamond Falls, and the botanical garden. When we returned we had a training staff dinner.

Monday morning began training for EC-57 volunteers. It started it with speeches by Dick Pyle, a chargé from Barbados, and minister from the cabinet on Saint Lucia. Volunteers sang their countries’ national anthems. The day ended with refreshments.

Tuesday the trainees returned to the Castries Comprehensive School. The dress code was a hot topic as it was broken again. Some volunteers were wearing jeans and even t-shirts.

I overheard on Wednesday that some volunteers were going to the A-Pub at Rodney Bay. Initially I ignored it because I was getting the feeling that I was an outsider. The trainees were at a different stage with a different attitude. Cindy asked me later and we ended up going.

27 July

I survived enough to go to church on Sunday. I also eat a hamburger.

On Monday I went into town to look for books. Cindy and Charmaign came along and did most of the work for me. That was okay because it gave me time to shop and eat at Rain.

Tuesday I attended Creole lessons after working in the Peace Corps office on sessions. We had to write stories on bad weather. After the lesson I went north to Key Largo for pizza. Donna was already there when Donald, Cindy, Char and Diane arrived.

Wednesday I ate Mexican food. Denise prepared it at Kate’s house. I met Donald and Cindy at J.Q.’s. We bought drinks for the dinner. Leigh, Jack, Elizabeth, Leigh’s brother and sister, and other people were there.

Thursday was a research trip to the Sir Arthur Lewis library. Annette met us and showed us around. I found some great articles in The Mathematics Teacher. I also read an Independent Study when I was awake enough. I passed on going to the Comprehensive School. I worked on the Macintosh instead.

Friday was a good if long day. It started with shopping in Castries. I bought a St. Lucia t-shirt at Kokonuts. When it turned out to be less money I bought more postcards. I haven’t really sent any yet, maybe two. I also went to the Artsibit Gallery. They had some nice paintings and some prints were affordable. I also got a listing of hotels on Martinique from a travel agency. I hoped to find transport for the Gros Piton climb on Saturday but there weren’t too many around. I went back to the hotel, watched “Designing Women,” and ate a doughnut I bought in town. I read some of the articles that I found in The Math Teacher.

A woman from OTAPS, Jenet, took Donald, Howard, Diane, Bertha and me for lunch at the Green Parrot and to talk about secondary projects.

I ended the day the next day at 1:43 after a trip to Gros Islet.

I woke up in time this morning in time to shower and eat before the first batch of Dominican volunteers arrived. We could see the plane land as we were at the breakfast table.

Fourteen of them arrived in good shape and on time. They seem like a good crew. Donald and I rode with him as far as the intersection. Then we headed to town. Donald and I try to split up but it never worked. I arranged for a transport to Gros Piton. I ran into Don at the clothes store. We stopped at KFC and headed back. I stopped at the office to edit my sessions and work with my disks.

When I went back to the hotel I went into the sea with Donald and then laid in the sun. Denise and Lisa came by. We went to the airport to welcome the remaining Dominican volunteers. I was surprised to see four trainees at the beach around that time.

I finally made it to a Rum Punch party. They had fish cakes. Carol joined us tonight. She returned from Grenada today. The gossip about Jack even reached there.

15 July

Sunday (7) morning I went to church. I arrived an hour too early. The travelers’ guide said service starts at 8:30. It actually started after Bible Study.

Monday after sessions Carol (from Grenada), Diane, Cindy, Donald and I headed off for pizza at Key Largo. When we arrived we learned that they are closed on Mondays. We ate Chinese at the Ginger Lily instead.

I went to the St. Lucia Creole lesson on Tuesday. Donald, Jack, Annette, Cuss, and Bertha were at the class taught by Michael and Ara?mel. Annette, Cuss, and I went to eat at D’s which had a large number of male couples and no females.

Wednesday I had a chance to go to Castries at lunchtime. I ate at Kentucky Fried Chicken. There was no electricity and consequently no air-conditioning.

Thursday I saw Carol from S. Dakota. We had drinks with Marshall on his way home from St. Vincent. We went out to eat at Capone’s.

Friday I went to Bertha’s to wash my clothes in her landlady’s washing machine. I also visited the Clauzzels. Then it was Gros Islet with the whole gang from training.

Saturday I want to Schwazel to see the arts and crafts center where Jim works. He drove us back to Castries via Soufriere. I went back to his house after I learned he would climb the Pitons.

Yesterday Denise, Christof, Jim, Mariness, and I left to go to the base of Gros Piton. It was a challenging trip because it was so steep. The mosquitoes were also out in force. I even got some small cuts.

This morning I woke up without the alarm clock. I was surprised at how tired I wasn’t. Leigh and I got dressed and hopped on a bus to Vieux Fort. We then caught a transport for the long ride to Castries. I took a taxi back to the hotel to arrive at 8:15. I ate and went to the sessions. I felt tired then. I made it through our short meeting without falling asleep. I picked up my clothes at Bertha’s and I met the gang to go to the Ginger Lilly. We were lucky to get a free ride home.

6 July

Saturday I took Leif to the market, but we couldn’t find any fish.

Sunday was pledge day at church. I got a vote of confidence from Rev. Riley that I would do all I could to help the church.

I went to Roseau Monday on the Itassi bus. I stayed at Don’s that night. I woke up again with very little sleep. After I showered I headed to the Peace Corps office. Molly’s picked up Don, Anita, and me and transported us to Melville Hall.

I woke with a little sleep accomplished again. This time I was in the New Vigie Beach hotel for the training of trainers. We met the other trainers and staff.

Wednesday we had another meal on Peace Corps. The checks had not arrived and we did not get money, only a little, until Friday. The nationals sang “Happy Birthday” and the “Star-Spangled Banner” on Thursday July 4.

I was very tired on Friday. I took a nap so I could get to Gros Islet. I met Jack Williamson and Denise Brown there.

We met for half of the day on Saturday. I got to see the schedule of the model school and the list of trainees.

I went with Bertha to Jimmy’s for a goodbye lunch for Em. I left with Jack to go to the beach for a farewell party for Denise and Kate.

28 June 1991

Sunday (9) I went to both services at church. In between the two services I went to the beach and got a little burn.

I left Monday morning for Antigua and arrived in Pittsburgh on time at 10 pm. I found out in North Carolina that rental cars are more expensive than I thought.

Tuesday I got my haircut correctly. I also attended David’s graduation.

Wednesday I went out to dinner with Pete, Brenda, Ken, and Ann Marie. I ate shark.

Thursday I went to Niagra Falls with Pete and his family. It was pretty good but too typically family like.

On Friday (14) I came back from the condo and saw Daddy, Trudy, and Ann. I stayed at the hotel with Trudy that night.

Saturday was the party. I think that was also the day I want to see the dentist.

On Father’s Day Trudy, David, Randy and Dad went to see the Cleveland Indians play baseball. I did some more shopping. Brenda didn’t want Pete to go to the game because she said the family should be together.

On Monday I went back with Dad. It worked out better that way because Ann Marie was picking up Diane from Pete’s on Friday and Jayne was coming back from Scranton. I went over to Joe’s that night.

Tuesday I went to the mall with Joe. We also saw Judy, Barb, and Matthew. Then we headed off to find Adam.

Adam did not take Wednesday off. So Joe and I went to Knobel’s. Jackie agreed to go to Jitterbugs but we ended up at Flaherty’s again.

Thursday I invited everyone over to my place. We ended up going to a bazaar, the Maltby one. I was up late again.

On Friday (21) Jane picked me up at my house at 6:30. We went for breakfast and then went to Pete’s house. I drove back with Ann Marie to Erie.

Saturday we went to see “City Slickers.” It was pretty disappointing. Afterwards we stopped at Dairy Queen.

Sunday was a day to finish recording music to take back with me. I didn’t finish it all. On the way back from the mall Ann Marie and I picked up some videos. She made pork chops just for me that night.

Monday I picked up my rental car. It was much cheaper to rent a car to Pittsburgh. I completed my packing for my trip back. I went to the grocery store but didn’t have enough money for everything I wanted.

I left very early Tuesday (25) with tears in my eyes. I made it to Pittsburgh with time to spare. I was in North Carolina for seven hours. If I had money I could have seen Raleigh.

I left early from Antigua Tuesday after arriving late the night before. I came back with a roommate. I met Leif Skille in San Juan. I tested him out before agreeing to share the apartment with him.

On Thursday I finished signing report cards. Mr. James graded all my exams and determined my year-end averages. I was a little upset at his comment on my students’ performances. He nastily asked why all the 3rd and 4th form grades were so low.

Friday today was the last day of school. I was bored most of the time. All the lack of sleep caught up with me. It feels good to have this year behind me. I hope you have a much better year come September.
