15 February

I typed up and sent out my third edition of Serious Ting last weekend. That work began as I finally got over my cold. I was surprised the cold didn’t return after I stayed up until almost 2:00 AM talking with Catherine; I had trouble sleeping with Marcy’s dogs making noises and had to get up early for market and Cook Dominica.

Another highlight last week was real pizza. Some lady from Jersey open a pizza restaurant. It was awesome. Bubbly crust, twirled dough, and mozzarella cheese. I went with Ingrid, Peter, Michele, and Mary on Friday night. Actually they met me 20 minutes after I arrived and was supposed to meet them. I went back on Sunday to discover what we suspected was true: Pizza was cheaper by the slice than by the whole pie. Eating at Cook Dominica, Mary and Peter’s and Pat’s also contributed to a good weekend.

This week I was accepted at NYU and Barb, Maryann, Peter & Mary spent Tues night with us.

Molly Barber on L’Escalier Tete Chien Feb 92
Also known as the snake’s staircase – Tête Chien being the local name for the boa constrictor because its head looks like that of a dog. Geographically, this rock formation is called a dyke. It resembles a gigantic petrified serpent crawling up the hillside from the ocean with its back crystallized into wedges of rock which forms a natural staircase. The ‘espalier’ features prominently in Carib myth and folklore.
You can see much better recent footage of this formation on youtube
Getting too close to the water can be dangerous as two people were pulled out into the Atlantic by big waves crashing on the lower part of the stairs.

2 February

Yesterday and today I’ve been doing my best to get over my cold. It’s really the first cold that I’ve had since I’ve been in the Peace Corps. It ran the gamut of causing me a sore throat on Wednesday to giving me a cough. I’ve been trying to cure it with rest.

Right now it would be impossible to rest as the entrepreneurs across the street are jamming their music at body-vibrating and house-shaking levels. There were two jams scheduled for this weekend: Saturday and Sunday. Last night the jam was down the street and not too noisy to sleep. Tonight it seems like it will be right across the street.

I just woke up minutes ago from a good nap. I’ll probably need another one if the music keeps me from sleeping.

I chose not to go to the beach this afternoon with Molly, Ingrid, and the rest. I was helping Valerie George with some Maths and then I copied my videotape message to Adam. After that I ate lunch, read, and felt motivated to sleep. If only I could be certain that I will tonight.
